All Thats Green Is Not Clean - Lessons from the Risk Based Management of a Gasworks Clean-up
Located on the western extension of Collins Street in the Victoria Harbour Precinct of Melbourne Docklands development, a clean-up notice was served by EPA on the site in 1994. Since the start of clean-up in 1999, about 270,000m3 of material contaminated mainly with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, has been excavated and treated. The majority was removed from the site (about 330,000 tonnes to landfill) and a large proportion re-used to fill excavations. The site was planned for high density residential, commercial or public open space use. - - Kenneth Mival, Senior Principal, URS Melbourne - Presented at Enviro 04

Benefit Cost Analysis for Environmental Flow Options:Thomson And Macalister Rivers
Natural resource economists in URS Australia were asked by the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment to assess one of the most important contemporary questions in water resource management, that is, "how do we best share water resources between the three principal water users"; namely, the environment, irrigators and urban users. In late 2000, a Task Force was established to review the bulk entitlements for the Macalister and Thomson Rivers in Victoria. - J Branson, N Sturgess, R Dumsday, URS Melbourne, Published in Water, September 2005, p.34

Communicating Spatial Uncertainty using Geospatial Reasoning
Users of remotely sensed imagery need to know about the spatial uncertainty in their image data in order to make sound decisions using their imagery. As a minimum, the user should understand the presence and level of spatial uncertainty in their data. This paper proposes the use of intelligent software agents as a means of assisting users to understand the spatial uncertainty in their images. - Blair C. Darragh, URS Melbourne and Chris J. Bellman, School of Mathematical & Geospatial Sciences, RMIT University

Economy vs Environment: The Great Asian Crisis
The environmental and sustainability movement is not globally pURS Melbourneued, as it is in ‘developed countries’. Two countries that comprise a third of the world’s entire population now also suddenly find themselves as two of the fastest growing economies in the world. The two giants are making the leap from two different angles: China through strengthening its industrial might; and India through information technology (IT), and its service sector. India, in leap-frogging the industrial phase to the institutional, is less likely to trade-off the environment than China. - - Terence Jeyaretnam, Prinicipal, URS Melbourne - Prepared for Engineers Australia monthly newsletter

Eternal Sunshine, but an oil-less planet
If you, like me, have recently been watching the price of a barrel of oil go up in world markets, continuing to break records, and wondered whether you should be trading your petrol-guzzler for a Toyota Prius or Honda Civic, you may well be using that excellent sense of logic that we engineers seem to have. - - Terence Jeyaretnam, Principal, URS Melbourne - Prepared for Engineers Australia monthly newsletter

Fuelling Landscape Repair: A Bioenergy Industry as a Sustainable Energy and Land-use Option for Australia
Development of a biomass energy industry, with short-rotation tree crops established on cleared farmland, could yield substantial economic, environmental and social benefits across the country by reducing dryland salinity impacts of on water quality, agriculture production, biodiversity and built infrastructure. Such an industry would also help to reduce Australia’s dependence on fossil fuels and cut the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable regional development. - - Bruce Howard, NRM Senior Consultant Environmental Economics, URS Perth and Chris Olszak, Consultant Economist, URS Melbourne - A report prepared for the Australian Conservation Foundation and Joint Venture Agroforestry Program, with the assistance of the Myer Foundation

The Day After Tomorrow
The day after tomorrow is a global catastrophe movie, along the lines of Armageddon, Independence Day and Deep Impact. However, the cataclysmic event this time is not from a stray meteor or aliens invading the planet, but rather from humanity’s own actions, or indeed inaction, in terms of the devastating impacts on our global environment. - - Terence Jeyaretnam, Principal, URS Melbourne - Prepared for Engineers Australia monthly newsletter

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - A Letter from Our Great Grandchildren
Our Forefathers, writes a 22 nd century citizen, in the late 1900's and early 2000's, conceived the theory of sustainability - to consider inter-generational equity in their actions. That is, to leave the planet at least in the state that they had found. It failed - due to the good, the bad and the ugly of humankind. - - Terence Jeyaretnam, Prinicipal, URS Melbourne - Prepared for Engineers Australia monthly newsletter

Towards Water Sustainability
The federation, which eventuated in 1901, has arguably not faced a more significant national issue than the water reform crises. In a historic meeting on the 25th of June 2004, the ‘colonies united’ at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and signed off on a national water plan that will aim, over time, to resolve this century-old debacle. - - Terence Jeyaretnam, Principal, URS Melbourne - Prepared for Engineers Australia monthly newsletter

Wanted: Martyr for Sustainability
The world is in need of a hero. It is an established fact that the greatest threat facing humankind is climate change and associated environmental degradation.
