URS appoints new regional legal counsel, Asia Pacific
Appointment to support long-term growth across Asia-Pacific
SYDNEY, NSW — May 11, 2009 — Engineering and environmental professional services firm, URS has appointed Chris Monahan as its new Regional Legal Counsel, Asia-Pacific, streamlining its reporting requirements into its NYSE listed arent, URS Corporation, and strengthening its legal counsel to the region.
Mr Monahan joins URS Asia Pacific from the United States, where he practised as a property and construction lawyer with leading Californian based firms, Morgan Miller Blair and Hanson Brigett.
Commenting on the appointment of Mr Monahan, URS Asia Pacific Managing Director, David Williamson, said Chris brings a powerful combination of international legal and engineering expertise to URS's presence in the Asia Pacific region.
"Chris began his career as a qualified structural engineer, where he worked on multi-million dollar private and public sector projects involving the design of commercial and municipal buildings."
"Having experience across both disciplines means Chris brings invaluable insights as we seek to enhance and expand the expertise provided to our clients and consortium partners."
"Chris will play an important role overseeing the legal aspects of how we are responding to the changing demands of the current economic climate. Clients are investing more time to detail the specific accountabilities of their professional services providers, to ensure projects are delivered in an environment where budgets are under scrutiny," he said.
"While the current economic conditions are challenging, URS is positioning itself to strengthen its services across the Asia-Pacific. This is reflected in Chris' appointment, and we look forward to his transition into our business over the coming months," Mr Williamson added.
Mr Monahan said he first visited Australia after the millennium celebrations, and soon after made it a personal goal to return one day to live and work.
"When I first visited Australia, I was moved by the country, its people emphasis and the emphasis on sports and athletics. Being into triathlon, surfing, and kite-surfing, I really felt at home.
"Consequently, when the opportunity arose for me to work in Australia at URS, I couldn't believe it. Not only was it an opportunity to relocate to Australia, but it also gave me the opportunity to work at one of the world's largest engineering firms, utilising all my education and work experience in accounting, engineering and law.
"URS is a Fortune 500 company, and among the leaders worldwide in engineering and environmental services. Increasingly, client projects require consulting engineering firms to draw from a global pool of services and resources to deliver complete project lifecycle management, which is an increasingly common theme for URS," Mr Monahan said.
Outside of work Chris has competed in a number of endurance events, including the Vineman Ironman Triathlon, and is also a black belt in Wado Ki Kai.
