Our waste management specialists work to achieve industry-best outcomes for clients, operating within this sector, consistently meeting regulatory requirements in the approval of landfill and waste projects.

Our innovative approach to waste issues provides sustainable and cost-effective solutions.

URS’s multidisciplinary range of services cover the 5R’s of waste management — reduction, reuse, recycle, recover and residual management.

Waste to Energy

Increasing disposal costs at landfills and potential environmental impacts are changing the way we look at alternatives for management of municipal waste. URS assists clients with evaluation of realistic alternatives including aerobic and anaerobic composting options, and thermal disposal options.

Landfill Gas Management

URS assists clients with management of methane, the hazardous and odorous greenhouse gas produced by landfills. Services include assessment of gas volumes and potential hazards created by offsite migration of gas, through to contract review for gas utilisation and advice on claiming greenhouse gas credits through energy generation.

Hazardous Waste

URS is an industry leader in the field of hazardous waste management and policy development. Through identifying synergies between waste types and industry needs we have developed cost-effective solutions to previously intractable problems.

Cleaner Production

URS works with clients to continuously improve products, services and processes to reduce pollution and waste at the source. We assist a wide variety of companies with implementation of cost effective cleaner technology strategies, and consistently find many opportunities exist through changing work practices, and management and training of staff — with little or no capital cost required.

Resource Efficiency

Guidelines have been developed by a variety of industry and government bodies, to provide advice and practical tools for designers and construction firms to reduce industry-related waste. For example in New Zealand the Ministry for the Environment have developed REBRI (Resource Efficiency Building Related Industries). URS consultants trained in REBRI can reflect our commitment to energy efficiencies and raise the bar with regard to construction site waste management. URS can assist companies to create a waste register and recycling programmes, implement education programmes and encourage and assist subcontractors and suppliers with waste reduction practices.
